The bill was passed on March 24, 2015, with an effective date of July 22, 2015. The new Act allows notaries to apply for a renewal commission earlier; previously notary bonding agencies had to wait 30 days prior to a notary’s expiration to submit their application, it has now been pushed back to 60 days. Notaries’ fees were also amended in the bill. The language was changed from “shall charge” to “may charge,” leaving it more to the discretion of the notary if they wish to charge a fee. The travel fees now include mileage to and from the notarial act. The mileage will be calculated with the federal rate for mileage reimbursement. Please read the entire bill to ensure you are completing your notarial duties according to the law.
